What is angioplasty?

Angioplasty is a treatment method in which a metal net-like tube (stent) is used to open a narrowed or blocked artery. Opening a narrowed artery with a stent (metal mesh) and ballooning leads to a reduction in symptoms and an improved quality of life.

Stenting is done in the following two ways depending on the patient’s condition and doctor’s discretion:

  • Angioplasty through the hand
  • Angioplasty through the leg

Procedures before angioplasty

There are some measures that must be taken prior to the surgery, including injecting some fluids such as sedatives and thinners like anticoagulants (to reduce blood clotting) into the body with an intravenous catheter. Afterwards, the surgery begins.

How long does angioplasty last?

This surgery lasts about 1 hour (angioplasty varies between 0 minutes and 2 hours, but generally it ends within 1 hour). It does not require complete anesthesia and it is generally done with local anesthesia or mild anesthesia in such a way that the patient is awake during the surgery.

Complications of angioplasty

Among the complications of angioplasty, the following can be mentioned:

  • Blood clotting
  • Vascular re-constriction
  • Bleeding
  • Vein rupture
