Dear patient:
Greetings;
We wish you good health and we’re hopeful that you are satisfied with the moments we were at your service and that you will return to your family and society as soon as possible. This educational pamphlet has been provided to you to increase your information about postoperative care and prevention of its complications.
* Location of the prostate gland:
It is an organ the size of a walnut that is placed under the bladder and surrounds the urinary outlet.
* Benign enlargement of the prostate gland (BPH)
More than half of men over the age of 60 suffer from benign prostate enlargement, and at the age of 80, about 80% are affected. It should be remembered that benign prostate enlargement is not cancer.
* Disease Symptoms:
- Urgent urination
- Poor flow of urine
- Feeling of frequent urination
- Waking up at night to urinate
- The need to strain while urinating
- Dysuria
- Delayed urination
* How to diagnose benign prostate enlargement:
1 – Complete medical history
2- Examination through the anus by a specialist doctor
3- Ultrasound (for prostate ultrasound, it is recommended that the patient’s bladder be full).
* Treatment:
Prostate disease should be treated only when it leads to severe symptoms or when it causes kidney dysfunction.
* The first step of treatment:
The treatment is a drug that helps to relax the pelvic muscles.
Drug treatment postpones surgery for some time, but in case of severe disease, surgical treatment is chosen.
* Surgery is performed in two types, open and closed:
The type of closed surgery known as TURP is performed more often and the recovery time is less. In the open surgery method, the capsule part of the prostate is kept and the inner part, which has increased growth and is obstructed, is removed. In this method, it is necessary to maintain the catheter or post-surgical counters after the surgery, and they are removed respectively by the attending physician. In the closed surgery, like the open surgery, the remaining prostate capsule and the grown internal parts are erased by a resectoscope (surgical tools), in these cases only a counter is installed for the patient, which is removed on the first or second day after the operation. In order to determine the pathology, the samples are sent to the pathology laboratory.
* Medicines:
After prostate surgery, the drugs that are prescribed for patients include antibiotics, painkillers and sometimes laxatives.
* Self-care after prostate surgery:
1-Consumption of plenty of liquids
2- If you have a Foley catheter, take care of the it and do not fold the pee bag tube
3- Not doing things that require force
4- In case of bleeding, take absolute rest and drink fluids, and if the bleeding continues, refer to the hospital emergency department.
5- Change the dressing every other day if it is dry, and daily if it is wet.
6- In case you have fever, refer to the hospital emergency department.
