Varicocele
Men Surgery Ward
* Definition:
Varicocele is the enlargement of the veins of the scrotum. This disease is one of the most common diseases after puberty. Varicocele is the most common cause of reduced sperm production and quality and infertility in men. A varicocele can also cause the testicles to shrink.
* Symptoms of varicocele:
Because varicocele has no symptoms, it is often discovered during infertility evaluations or during a routine examination. Varicocele is rarely painful. The pain may range from a dull feeling of discomfort or a sharp, stabbing pain. This pain increases with sitting, standing or physical activity, especially if it is for a long time. During the day, as the hours pass, the pain enhances and it gets better by lying on the back, and over time, the varicocele becomes bigger and more distinct.
* Why does varicocele occur?
The cause of varicocele is not clear, but many specialists believe that dysfunction of the intraveinal valves prevents the optimal blood flow to the testicles, and the primary cause is the incomplete functioning of the intraveinal valves and dilation of the veins. Varicocele frequently occurs during puberty and in the left testicle, and its cause is related to the position of the vein of the left testicle. Meanwhile, the presence of varicocele in one testicle can affect sperm production in both testicles.
* Risk factors for varicocele:
The most likely occurrence of this disease is between the ages of 15 and 25 years.
* Self-care:
• There is no prohibition on food consumption and you can continue your usual diet.
• You can continue your normal activities one week after the surgery and you should avoid doing heavy work until two weeks after the operation, but after two weeks of exercise and heavy activity, it will not cause recurrence of varicocele.
• Change the dressing two days after surgery, and if there is no discharge, there is no need to re-dress.
• If the medicine is prescribed by the doctor, take the medicine on time.
• If you have undergone varicocele surgery due to infertility, you should see a doctor every three months with a sperm test. Test improvement takes about three to twelve months.
• In case of fever over 38 degrees, bleeding or severe discharge in the surgery area or around the testicles, you should see your attending physician.
