* Tonsil Definition:
Tonsils are two oval-shaped tissues located at the back of the throat.
* Tonsillitis symptoms include:
Swelling of the tonsils, sore throat, difficulty in swallowing and sensitivity of the lymph nodes on both sides of the neck. Most cases of tonsillitis are caused by a viral infection, but bacterial infections can also cause tonsillitis.
* The common symptoms of this disease are:
- Red and swollen tonsils
- Creating white or yellow spots on the tonsils
- Sore throat
- Difficult or painful swallowing
- Fever
- Enlargement and tenderness of the lymph nodes in the neck
- Bad breath
- Stomach pain, especially in young children
- Neck dryness
- Headache
* Risk factors for tonsillitis include:
- Young age: Tonsillitis is very common in preschool to mid-teen years.
- Frequent exposure to germs: School-aged children are in close contact with their peers and are repeatedly exposed to viruses or bacteria that can cause tonsillitis.
* Self-care after tonsillectomy:
- Complete rest for one week after the surgery is recommended.
- For two days after the surgery, only cold liquids, ice cream and fruit juice should be consumed.
- From the third day, soft and chilled foods such as strained soup and rice-pudding should be given carefully and as much as the patient can take.
- Solid, hot and dry foods should not be given for a week.
- Fever after surgery is normal and can be relieved by giving plenty of fluids and painkillers.
- After the surgery, there is usually bad breath. Therefore, mouthwash and gargling with cold normal saline serum should be done five to six times a day.
- The pain in the throat, especially while eating, continues one to two weeks after the surgery and it is relieved by taking painkillers.
- Until complete recovery, if blood or bloody sputum is observed at any time, you should contact your attending physician or go to the hospital emergency department.
- See your attending physician one week after the surgery.
